IMAGINE taking a leap back in time and finding yourself magically transported to the year of our Lord 1454. Through the stillness of the night you hear the soft echo of horses hooves approaching. Your eye is caught by the flicker of torches between the battlements of the Lower Castle, and suddenly a burning arrow lights up the outline of a magnificent rose and white granite chess board of gigantic proportions which fills the main square.
This is the beginning of the historical re-enactment of the noble XV century chess duel fought out between Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara. The match, complete with live costumed players is staged on the beginning of September. And the reason for this chess challenge? The two nobleman were to pit their wits against each other for nothing less than the hand of the beautiful Lionora, the young daughter of Lord Taddeo Pariso who had been sent by the Venetian Republic to govern within the city walls of Marostica.
Unknown to her father, Lionora's heart had secretly already been captured by one of her two suitors, and only if he could triumph over his opponent would the magical atmosphere be complete ... Every two years the magic is renewed and this unusual story of love is brought to life in the splendour of an awe inspiring spectacle involving more than 600 characters in period costume in a truly unique medieval atmosphere .
